- This function is used to send prepared messages or any other text files
- to the system you are calling. Enter the path and name of the file you
- wish to send.
-
- ═══════════
- Line Pacing
- ═══════════
-
- Line Pacing is used to keep transmitted data synchronized with received
- (echoed) data and is used when a prompt is being sent for each line
- (usually ":" or "?", following the line number).
-
- To use line pacing, enter the system's line prompt. {COMMO} will wait
- for this prompt before sending each line.
-
- The pacing character may be any ASCII character other than linefeed,
- e.g. "^m" or "|" for carriage return. See Appendix D in COMMO.DOC for
- details on how to represent special characters.
-
- If pacing is not used, the XON/XOFF protocol will be in effect.
-
- ═══════════════════
- Stripping Linefeeds
- ═══════════════════
-
- Normally you will want to strip linefeeds from your outgoing text. But
- if all your data displays on the same line at the remote, then you must
- configure {COMMO} to send the linefeeds (see "Configuration File").
-
- ═════════════════════
- Expanding Blank Lines
- ═════════════════════
-
- You may configure {COMMO} to send a space character whenever a blank
- line is encountered in the text file you are sending. This will prevent
- your message from terminating prematurely if you are sending to a BBS
- message editor (see "Configuration File").

- Rules
- ═════
-
- Directory entries are limited to one per line (up to 255 characters).
-
- Comments may be placed anywhere outside the curly braces (see below) or
- on separate lines.
-
- ═══════════════════════════════
- Example Dialing Directory entry
- ═══════════════════════════════
-
- System Telephone System Linked Data Rate,
- Name Number Password Macro Data Format
- (optional) (required) (optional) (opt.) (optional)
-
- ┌───────────┐ ┌──────────────┐ ┌──────────┐ ┌───┐ ┌──────┐
-
- File City BBS {1-707-555-1234} {mypassword} {fcb} {2400,8}
-
- ═══════════
- System Name File City BBS, Anytown
- ═══════════
-
- Up to 40 characters in length, must NOT be enclosed in curly braces.
-
- ════════════════
- Telephone Number {1-707-555-1234}
- ════════════════
-
- Transmitted to the modem between the Dialing Prefix and the Dialing
- Suffix (see "Configuration File") to form the Dialing Command.
-
- Example: { 9,555-1234 }
-
- This might be used to dial out from your office. The comma will cause
- the modem to delay for 2 seconds before dialing (waiting for the
- outside line). Modems ignore blanks and hyphens.
-
- The Dialing Prefix may be chosen from a list of four in the
- Configuration File and is indicated by #1,#2,#3 or #4. The prefix
- code must appear right after the left curly brace:
-
- {#2 555-1234} Use prefix 2
-
- Dialing Prefix 1 is the default if none is specified.
-
- ═══════════════
- System Password {mypassword}
- ═══════════════
-
- A different Password may be defined for each system that you call. The
- rules for the password string are the same as for any ASCII data
- string except that the length is limited to 64 characters. Thus you
- could have a Password String like:
-
- {7|~pword|~1234}
-
- which would send a user number, password, and last four digits of a
- phone number with half-second delays in between (used to log into a
- WWIV BBS).
-
- The Password String may be sent using the Alt-P key command or by
- using the # symbol in a SEND macro function (see "Macro Processor").
-
- The Password String may be omitted, but a null string "{}" must be
- used as a placeholder if a Linked Macro and/or Parameters String are
- present.
-
- Passwords are invisible in the Dialing Directory window, but appear
- when you enter [E]dit mode.
-
- ════════════
- Linked Macro {fcb}
- ════════════
-
- If a Linked Macro is specified it will be executed when a connection
- is established with the remote system. Use this macro to login, read
- messages, download or whatever you need to do.
-
- The Linked Macro may be omitted, but a null string "{}" must be used
- as a placeholder if a Parameters String is present
-
- ══════════════════════
- Data Rate, Data Format {2400,8}
- ══════════════════════
-
- Include these only if the settings for the system are different from
- your usual settings. Either or both may be omitted and {COMMO} will
- use the Configuration File settings.
-
- For example you might have a string like "{,7}", which would set the
- Data Format to 7,e,1 but use the default setting for the Data Rate.
-
- If both fields are omitted the string may be null "{}" or omitted
- entirely.

-
- Pressing Alt-G brings up the Configuration File in edit mode (see
- "Internal Editor" for details).
-
- The Configuration File contains settings for many parameters used by
- {COMMO}. Some of these are "initial" or "start" values only and are
- controlled during a session with key commands. Others (marked with a
- "*" in the sample file) may be changed for the current session using the
- Internal Editor. Save the file to make these changes permanent.
-
- Each line in the Configuration File has a "string" of characters
- enclosed in curly braces. Each set of curly braces is necessary even if
- the contents are "null." A null string would look like this: {}.
-
- Remember that all text outside the curly braces is commentary and not
- relevant to the configuration process. To save memory you may delete
- any of the commentary after you are familiar with the items.
-
- Each item in the sample Configuration File will now be described. Items
- will be shown as they appear in the sample file.
-
- ══════════════════════════════════════════
- 1 {1} Initial Serial Port (1-4)
- ══════════════════════════════════════════
-
- May be 1,2,3 or 4. Startup value only -- use the Alt-L key command to
- change the serial port while in {COMMO}.
-
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 2 * {2400,8} Default Line Parameters: Speed, Format
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- This string consists of two fields: {Data Rate,Data Format}. The
- default values will be used when dialing if overrides are not
- specified in the Dialing Directory. The Set Terminal Parameters key
- command, Alt-L, may be used to manually change these "line" parameters
- while in the Terminal Screen.
-
- Data Rate. Sometimes referred to as "baud rate", this is the speed
- of transmission. See "AutoBaud Detect" for more information on
- setting the Data Rate.
-
- Data Format. {COMMO} allows you to set this characteristic of the
- data transmission to one of two values:
-
- 8 (for 8,n,1). Most common format for BBS's.
- 7 (for 7,e,1). Used by some commercial services.
-
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 3 {no} Start with AutoBaud Detect on (yes,no)
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- Determines the initial state of the AutoBaud toggle. See "AutoBaud
- Detect."
-
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 4 * {AT S0=0 S7=60 E0 Q0 V1 X4 &C1 &D2 |} Modem Init String
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- (2400 bps and higher)
-
- This string is normally sent to your modem when {COMMO} is started or
- when you use the Alt-O key command.
-
- If you are using a 1200 bps modem you should remove the "&C1 &D2"
- commands. In either case the "X" command may have to be adjusted.
- Detailed instructions are given in Appendix A "Setting Up Your Modem"
- in COMMO.DOC.
-
- ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 5 * {ATDT} Dial Prefix #1 (default) see Online Help
- 6 * {} Dial Prefix #2
- 7 * {} Dial Prefix #3
- 8 * {} Dial Prefix #4
- 9 * {|} Dial Suffix
- ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- These strings are used to create the dialing command. The prefix,
- telephone number and suffix will be strung together in that order and
- sent to your modem.
-
- Any one of the four prefixes may be selected in the telephone number
- string (see "Dialing Directory"). The default is #1.
-
- Variations on the prefix include pulse dialing (ATDP) if you don't
- have a tone line and the addition of PBX codes (ATDT9,) if they apply
- to all numbers that you call. The suffix is typically just a carriage
- return (|). Your modem manual has additional tips on dialing prefixes
- and suffixes.
-
- ══════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 10 * {45} Dialing cycle time-out (seconds)
- ══════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- This is the maximum time that {COMMO} will wait before redialing. If
- your modem does not return a message when a number is busy you might
- want to shorten this delay (to 20 seconds, e.g.). However if you are
- calling long distance the call may take longer to go through and you
- will be cut off if the time-out is too short. May be from 1 to 999
- seconds.
-
- ════════════════════════════════════════════
- 11 * {2} Inter-dial delay (seconds)
- ════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- This is the amount of time {COMMO} will wait in between dialing
- attempts (single or multi-number). Make this number larger, say 5 or
- 10 seconds, if you want to give incoming calls a greater chance of
- getting through. May be from 1 to 999.
-
- ══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 12 * {CONNECT} Dialing success response(s)
- 13 * {BUSY,NO CARRIER,NO DIALTONE} Dialing failure response(s)
- ══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- These response codes can be found in your modem manual. Do not
- include the data rate in the CONNECT response if you are enabling
- AutoBaud.
-
- Responses are case sensitive and there should be no null strings or
- extra spaces.
-
- ════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 14 * {yes} Clear dialing marks when saving directory (yes,no)
- ════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- If this is "yes" dialing marks will be erased when saving the Dialing
- Directory file to disk. Set it to "no" if you wish the marks to be
- saved with the file, to be used in the next session.
-
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 15 * {no} Drop DTR and RTS on exit (yes,no)
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- Leave this "no" if you ever plan to exit {COMMO} and return while
- still online (DTR is never dropped during Shell to DOS or the EXEC
- macro function). Dropping DTR normally causes most modems to
- disconnect.
-
- ══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 16 * {} Com1 Port address and IRQ overrides.
- 17 * {} Com2 These are normally left blank.
- 18 * {} Com3 Refer to Online Help for
- 19 * {} Com4 important details.
- ══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- Port I/O addresses and IRQ numbers are determined as follows:
-
- Normally if there is an address in the DOS port table for the
- requested serial port then that address will be used. Otherwise the
- {COMMO} default address will be used. Default base address and IRQ
- number for each port are as follows:
-
- Com# Address IRQ
-
- 1 3f8 4
- 2 2f8 3
- 3 3e8 4
- 4 2e8 3
-
- PCjr users note that if Com1 is specified and the DOS port address is
- 2f8, then IRQ 3 will be used. This is correct for a PCjr without the
- internal modem.
-
- Port base address and/or IRQ no. may always be overridden. For
- example to set Com4, port address = 238, IRQ = 5:
-
- 12 {238,5} Com4 important details
-
- To set Com3, port address = 3f8, IRQ = 4:
-
- 11 {3f8,4} Com3 refer to Online Help for
-
- Your serial adapter manual may give a range of addresses, for example
- "3f8-3ff." Use the first value as the base address.
-
- Please be aware that adding or changing override values with the
- Internal Editor will NOT make an immediate difference. You must then
- open the Set Terminal Parameters window [Alt-L], select the desired
- serial port [F4] and press [Enter].
-
- Note that the Com# (1-4) is merely a logical designation, used for
- setting defaults and for display on the Status Line. Any serial port
- attached to your system may be accessed by using override values (make
- sure these are accurate).
-
- ═════════════════════════════════════════════
- 20 * {yes} Expand blank lines (yes,no)
- 21 * {yes} Strip linefeeds (yes,no)
- ═════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- See "ASCII Upload" for details on these items.
-
- ═════════════════════════════════════════════
- 22 * {c:\commo} Path to find uploads
- 23 * {c:\commo} Path to place downloads
- ═════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- These are the disk/directory paths that will be used for ASCII Upload
- and for insertion into EXEC macro functions when you use the Macro
- Processor.
-
- ══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 24 {c:\commo\commo.cap} Path,name for initial Capture File
- ══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- When the Capture File is open all text coming from the remote system
- will be recorded to the disk file you have named here. Capture may be
- opened and closed with the Capture File Options key command, Alt-1.
-
- If open, Capture will automatically be closed during Shell to Dos and
- EXEC macro functions, then re-opened upon return to {COMMO}.
-
- If a filename only (no path) is specified, the current directory will
- be used. See the Alt-1 key command for information on opening,
- closing or changing to a new Capture File.
-
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 25 {c:\commo\commo.scn} Path,name for initial Screen Image file
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- The Screen Image Save key command will append the image of the
- Terminal Screen to this file. If a filename only (no path) is
- specified, the current directory will be used. See the Alt-I key
- command for information on changing to a new Screen Image file.
-
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 26 * {07,no} Terminal screen colors,
- enable mono attributes (yes,no)
- 27 * {17} File window text colors
- 28 * {47} File window border colors
- 29 * {5e} File window cursor colors
- 30 * {47} Small window text colors
- 31 * {17} Small window border colors
- 32 * {30} Status Line colors
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- The second parameter in item 20 may be set to "yes" if you want to set
- your own monochrome attributes (colors). If "no" (or if omitted) the
- default mono attributes will be used. This has no effect on color
- displays.
-
- Colors should be set so that the different parts of the screen
- contrast with each other. For example the Status Line should be
- easily discernable from the rest of the Terminal Screen. And the
- borders and Selector Bar should stand out against the text portion of
- the various windows.
-
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 33 {yes} Start with Master Sound on (yes,no)
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- If this is set to "yes" sound will be on when {COMMO} is started.
- Later you may toggle this ON/OFF with Alt-3. All sound will be
- suppressed if this is OFF, including error beeps.
-
- ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 34 * {yes} Dialing connection alarm (yes,no)
- ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- Controls the alarm signalling a connection when Auto Dialing is used.
-
- ════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 35 * {yes} ASCII Upload finished alarm (yes,no)
- ════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- Controls the alarm signalling that an ASCII Upload has completed.
-
- ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 36 * {3} Maximum number of alarm rings (1-999)
- ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- Sets the number of times the alarm will ring. {COMMO} will usually go
- on its way when the alarm stops ringing. You may press a key at any
- time to stop the alarm and continue.
-
- ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 37 {no} Start in Dialing Directory (yes,no)

- 38 {no} Start with Capture File open (yes,no)
- ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- If this is set to "yes" Capture will be open when {COMMO} is started.
- You may use Capture File Options, Alt-1, to OPEN/CLOSE Capture or to
- change the Capture File path/name. See also "Capture File Options."

- 40 * {A} Initial Terminal Type (Ansi-bbs,Vt102,Tty)
- ════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- This is the startup Terminal Emulation Type. Terminal Type may be
- changed at any time from the Terminal Screen using the Alt-L key
- command. See also Appendix E "Terminal Emulation" in COMMO.DOC.
-
- ══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 41 {no} Start with Signal Lights on (yes,no)
- ══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- If this is set to "yes" Signal Lights will be on when {COMMO} is
- started. You may use Alt-0 to toggle the display to the System Name.
-
- ══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 42 * {no} Snow checking (CGA), slower display (yes,no)
- ══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
-
- If you see any "snow" type interference in your CGA display, try a
- "yes" answer to this toggle. Otherwise leave it "no" so that the
- display will be as fast as possible.

- "dummy" macro-id (such as {---} or {...}, etc.) may be used for
- point-and-shoot macros.
-
- Two special macro-id's are used for {COMMO} Auto Receive:
-
- {.z.} Zmodem AutoDownload (use with DSZ.COM)
- {.p.} Puma Auto-Start (use with PUMA.EXE)
-
- Just place the respective macro-id on your Zmodem or Puma receive macro

- matched pairs. If necessary compare the file with the original one
- in the {COMMO} package. If this happens while you are editing, you
- will not be allowed to save the file to disk. You should return to
- editing and correct the problem. Or, if necessary, exit {COMMO}
- and replace the file.
-
- "Sorry, out of memory"
-
- There may not be enough memory for {COMMO} to operate. Or your
- support files may be too large. In the latter case try reducing
- the size of the Dialing Directory File, etc. Removing comments may
- help.
-
- "Cannot locate command processor"
-
- This is an unusual condition. Type "SET" at the DOS prompt and be
- sure there is a "COMSPEC=" in the list. If there is, make sure
- that COMMAND.COM is in the path specified.
-
- "SET COMMO= failed, path too long"
-
- The path located in the system environment is too long. Do another
- "SET COMMO=" command to correct this.
-
- "File space full! Delete unnecessary text."
-
- {COMMO} allows about 35,000+ bytes total for the Configuration
- File, Dialing Directory and Macro File. This limit may be reached
- when editing any of the files with the Internal Editor. If this
- happens you must reduce the size of any or all of the files. Try
- removing comment lines and any other extraneous information.
-
- "Memory allocation error, unable to edit."
-
- This is usually the result of loading a resident program (TSR) in
- the Shell to DOS or via the EXEC macro function. Other causes
- involve a corruption of DOS parameters and require rebooting.
-
- "Unable to write file, check path or FILES= parameter."
- "too many files"
-
- Since {COMMO} re-writes the file to the same path from which it was
- loaded, the path can only be bad if it no longer exists. Check
- this possibility. You may need to increase your "FILES=" parameter
- in CONFIG.SYS.
-
- "Dial command too long"
-
- The dial command consists of the dial prefix, the phone number
- string and the dial suffix. The total is limited to 72 characters.
-
- "Bad parameter after "%"."
-
- Check the summary of allowable parameters in the "Macro Processor"
- section.
-
- "Command too long for DOS."
-
- DOS commands are limited to 127 characters.
-
- "Unable to open Capture File."
- "Unable to open screen image file."
- "Unable to open file."
- "File not found."
- "Path not found."
- "Too many files."
-
- Check the following:
- 1. That the path exists where the file should be.
- 2. That the file itself exists (this won't be the problem if the
- file is being created).
- 3. Too many files may be open. You may need to increase your
- FILES= parameter in CONFIG.SYS.
-
- "Check Capture File, disk is full!"
- "Check Screen Image file, disk is full!"
-
- These messages indicate that a disk is full. The files should be
- edited regularly to ensure that they are not occupying too much
- disk space.
-
- "Not enough memory to load shell"
- "Error trying to load shell"
-
- A problem was encountered during Shell to DOS or EXEC macro
- function. If memory is not the problem, then a system error
- condition exists. Make sure that COMMAND.COM is still available in
- the "COMSPEC=" path.
